The Wausau VA Clinic in Rothschild
VA calls it the Wausau VA Clinic, but the street address is 1105 East Grand Avenue in Rothschild, about 5 miles from the center of Wausau as the crow flies. It is one of four outpatient clinics in the VA Tomah health care system.
Past the clinic, the map spreads out quickly:
- Wisconsin Rapids VA Clinic, another Tomah clinic, about 40 miles off as the crow flies.
- Tomah VA Medical Center, the system’s hospital, about 78 miles as the crow flies.
- Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Facility in Iron Mountain, Michigan, about 97 miles. It belongs to a different system, the same one that runs the Rhinelander VA Clinic.
For a compensation exam, go by the appointment letter. The VA may use the Rothschild clinic, a medical center or a contract examiner, so a long drive is possible. If the date or location won’t work, ask for a new one before it comes and goes; a no-show can leave the VA ruling on the evidence it already has.
Counseling at the Wausau Vet Center Outstation
Wausau has one of five staffed Vet Center locations in Wisconsin: the four main centers and this outstation. The Wausau Vet Center Outstation is at 605 South 24th Avenue, Suite 24, about a mile from the city center as the crow flies. The La Crosse Vet Center runs it, and it keeps weekday hours.
Vet Centers offer free, confidential counseling in a non-medical setting, and VA’s Vet Center call center answers around the clock. The counseling stands on its own. If you later file a PTSD or other mental health claim, you can request your own counseling records and decide whether to send them in as evidence.
Marathon County Veteran Service Office and Other Free Help
The Marathon County Veteran Service Office helps county residents with VA claims at no cost. In June 2025 it co-hosted an in-person Veterans Town Hall and Expo in Wausau with the Tomah VA.
Merrill is in Lincoln County, which has its own veterans service officer; WDVA says all 72 counties do. Statewide, WDVA’s Federal Claims Assistance section in Milwaukee serves as an accredited representative too, and the American Legion, VFW and DAV have accredited service officers who work with county staff.
We don’t replace any of them. A free case review with us is a phone or video conversation to sort out what your claim needs and which route makes sense, including a county officer when that’s the better fit.
Military Ties for Wausau-Area Guard and Reserve Veterans
Recent official sources don’t place a Guard or Reserve unit in Wausau itself. The nearest confirmed military presence is at Camp Douglas, about 78 miles away as the crow flies, home to Volk Field Air National Guard Base and the headquarters of the 32nd “Red Arrow” Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Separately, a detachment of the 1st Battalion, 120th Field Artillery is moving to Marshfield after the Berlin Armory closed in September 2026.
Claims built on part-time service rise or fall on proof of duty status. An injury on a drill weekend can qualify. So can an injury or illness that began during annual training. What proves the date and the status is usually the paperwork, so gather:
- Every set of orders you can find, from annual training and schools to federal mobilizations
- DD 214s for federal active duty, and your NGB Form 22 if you’ve separated from the Guard
- Line of duty paperwork for anything that happened at drill or annual training
- Medical notes from drill weekends and annual training, plus periodic health assessments

Claim Situations We Talk Through With Marathon County Veterans
Filing for the first time
Lock in your date with an Intent to File, then gather records and a medical opinion. The first claim guide lays out the order.
Asking for a higher rating
Treatment notes from the Rothschild clinic or your own doctor can show a condition has gotten worse. See how a rating increase works.
Pushing back on a denial
Read the reason, then choose the review lane that answers it. The denied claim page compares all three.
Toxic exposure
Vietnam-era Agent Orange, the Gulf War and post-9/11 burn pits all carry presumptive conditions, and the PACT Act widened those lists in 2022.
When work isn’t possible
Individual Unemployability pays at the 100% rate if service-connected conditions keep you from steady work. To see how ratings stack, try the VA disability calculator.
