Get the Details Right on Your VA Claim

Plenty of claims stall over something small: a thin exam report, a medical opinion with no reasoning, a deadline that slipped by. These four articles cover those pieces for Wisconsin veterans who want to understand the process instead of guessing at it.

How it fits together

Where Each Piece Shows Up in a Claim

A disability claim moves through roughly the same stages for everyone. Here is where each article comes into play:

  1. Before you file. Lock in a potential start date with an Intent to File. The effective date article explains why that one step can be worth months of pay.
  2. Building the evidence. Most claims need three things: a current diagnosis, something that happened in service, and a link between the two. Buddy statements help prove the middle part when your records are silent. A nexus letter supplies the link.
  3. The exam. The VA often schedules a C&P exam to measure how severe the condition is and, sometimes, to give its own opinion on the link.
  4. The decision. When the VA grants a claim, your effective date sets how much back pay comes with it. When it denies one, filing a review within a year keeps that date alive.

You file your own claim, at no cost, through VA.gov or with help from a free representative. In Wisconsin, that includes county veterans service offices and accredited groups like the American Legion, DAV and VFW.
