Madison is where the Wisconsin National Guard keeps its headquarters, alongside the Department of Military Affairs on Wright Street. The 115th Fighter Wing is at Truax Field, where it also serves as a first responder for aircraft fire emergencies with Dane County Regional Airport. The 64th Troop Command is headquartered in Madison too, and the 1st Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment has a Madison location.
A Guard career usually mixes several kinds of duty, and the VA treats each one differently. Knowing which one you were on when something happened is half the claim:
- Federal mobilization or deployment. Counts like any active service. The DD 214 from that tour is your core document.
- Annual training and other active duty for training. Injuries and illnesses that started or got worse while you were on those orders can qualify.
- Drill weekends (inactive duty training). Generally injuries only, with exceptions for a heart attack, cardiac arrest or stroke.
- State active duty called by the governor. Generally not treated as federal service for VA purposes.
What to gather before a review
Pull every set of orders covering the period that matters, any line of duty determination (Army units use DA Form 2173; Air Guard units use AF Form 348), your points or drill attendance statement, and any sick call or unit medical notes. If nobody ever completed line of duty paperwork, a buddy statement from someone who saw the injury can help fill that hole.
